In this economy, people do what they can to get noticed by potential employers. For my friend Rachel Hill, she made her job search into a bicycle tour.

Rachel bought a bike in Vancouver, BC and heading down the West Coast, riding her trusty used Shwinn from interview to interview. She’s a talented person with experiecne in the Peace Corps (we trained together in Burkina Faso), a recent Fulbright scolarship, and a graduate degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Elk Cove Landscapes

It’s been a busy summer, but I’m taking some time today to print images for my family’s winery, Elk Cove Vineyards. They’ve just redone their tasting room, with fresh white walls where there was previously wine storage so it feels very empty! Perfect for some big canvas prints. The prints will be up for this weekend’s busy Labor Day festivities, a great time for wine tasting in the Willamette Valley.

I spent three nights camping in the Oak Trees, among the sounds of tree frogs and baby goats. I got up at 4:30 am to hike up the hill with my tripod to photograph Mount Richmond Vineyard in sweet morning light:

I also invited myself for dinner at my parents house, suffering through home grown beans and beets, my mom’s saffron risotto and grilled salmon to get this evening shot of Clay Court:

My folks are very tolerant of me excusing myself from the dinner table when it seems like a sun break might hit! It was a cloudy day and I wasn’t sure I would get the shot, but the sun came through and lit up the fresh green of the vines beautifully.

Crazy right?

So I flew down to Oakland back in late January to photograph Merrill Garbus aka Tune-Yards for promo shots for her new album, Who-Kill. And now she’s famous:

The album will be released on April 19, 2011. You can listen and download a free copy of her song “bizness” on the Tune-Yards website AND you can see her incredible video here.

You can also find this image on Page 34 of the March 17th, 2011 edition of the Rolling Stone. Yes, it’s the one with Snookie on the cover. No, I had no idea who she was until I bought my two copies of the magazine…

Tune-Yards is currently on tour. April 28th she’s playing the Doug Fir in Portland and I will be there – let me know if you will too!

Together Green @ Portland Audubon Society

I recently was hired to shoot photos at the Portland Audubon Society Sanctuary. They have a grant through Together Green, a partnership between National Audubon Society and Toyota that gets people out in their communities volunteering and working hard. I had a lot of fun with the volunteers – we had a beautiful Oregon spring day (meaning it could have rained at any point, but it didn’t!) and the volunteers replaced a bridge that had been washed out, pulled heaps and heaps of invasive Ivy, and rehabilitated a muddy path. Very cool to see how much they accomplished in one day!

BABIES!

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of photographing Jana and her daughter Audrey in their home. Now I know that fluffy pink isn’t really Audrey’s style, but I just had to include this image on the blog. Audrey is busy drumming up modeling gigs when she’s not sleeping or eating or playing her drum. If you have been searching for an adorable baby, boy or girl (audrey also works in drag!) you can contact her agency.

Jana Losey, in addition to being a rad mom, is a brilliant musician and an incredible massage therapist.

We’ve been trading photography for massage since Audrey was itty bitty. On the day we had scheduled pregnancy photos we had this conversation:

me:”Hi Jana, I was just calling to see how you’re feeling for our shoot today.”

Jana:”Guess what? I had a baby yesterday!”

So I’ve adopted a new pregnancy photography policy to encourage women to do the shoot about a month from their due date.

You aren’t going to get too much bigger after that, but there’s a chance you might miss the shoot!

Wine Spirit Archive

I recently did some photography for the Wine Spirit Archive and the images are up on their website!!! Mimi, who runs WSA here in Portland, is an amazing instructor and has a great space by Biwa, one of a fabulous place to get some food after a tasting.

As someone who was forced to go to wine tasting as a small child, I know some things about wine tastings. In fact, I have a strong tendency to get bored or restless or want to curl up and sleep under the table when I get dragged along to a tasting, especially one where they are just trying to sell me wine.

But the WSA really is all about education and I learned a TON from the class I attended there. Mimi and Adam make it fun and interesting, they encourage their students to critically analyze the characteristics of each wine, and they have a great library of aromas that’s great fun to quiz people on. They do serious education for folks who are servers, sommeliers, or just love learning about wine.

The Life Saver Cocktail

I photographed this stunning cocktail for Par for Life at Jimmy Mak’s Jazz Club in Downtown Portland. PAR is the Prostate Awareness Research Foundation and they are trying to get people talking about Prostate Cancer. Remember how before you could get everything in pink women really didn’t talk enough about Breast Cancer? Well we are still learning, but men need a similar movement so they have the information and support they need if they do face a diagnosis.

You can get the Life Saver Cocktail (no life savers in it thankfully, it’s actually a pomegranate martini) at four clubs around Portland. $1 from each cocktail sold goes to PAR for life. WEDDINGS!

So some of you know that I’m in cahoots with Amy Cave and we are photographing weddings under the auspices of Swoon Imagery. It’s interesting that I’m doing weddings, because I once assumed that I wouldn’t like the job for the not-so-very-good-reason that many other photographers don’t do weddings.

However, last summer I shot a wedding with Michael Jones, who I assist (and who doesn’t typically do weddings, but he does AMAZING product photography), at a wedding and I LOVED IT. “Huh… Fast paced, lots of people, families, big party… Of Course!” It was a blast, although the groom did make me cry by singing a ballad to his love during their first dance. Drats! My secret weakness for country music exposed!

So last Saturday, on New Years Day Amy Cave and I had our first wedding together as a team. It was a grand success and we’re super happy with the images. It helped that the bride and groom were just wonderful people, with extremely nice families. Everyone was so cooperative that we finished the group photos early! Which I think surprised everyone. Shoot Your Art

I cry when beautiful art looks crummy on a website. So I love working with artists so that their work looks stellar on Etsy or their website. Above is a sampling of works I’ve photographed, from top left clockwise, work from Joe Mansfield, Ryah Radomski, Lisa Arquette, Mary Mac, Karl Ramentol and Ken Tomita.

I got interested in doing copy work for Artists when I was involved with Project Chaboo. 50 artists collaborated with Bamboo artist Ken Tomita to make a variety of benches made from bamboo, yes, but also from cement, recycled blinds, rosin, fabric… I did all of the product photography for the project and some of the portraits. Ken Tomita is now in cahoots with Joe Mansfield with a project they call Grove. Especially interesting if you have an iphone…

CCA Gala

The Children’s Cancer Association is one of my favorite organizations – so when they call me asking for a volunteer photographer, I say yes if I can. Their annual Hero Gala is an incredible event. It was held at Nike’s Tiger Woods Center – a beautiful site complete with a sit-down theater, banquet hall, and an atrium-entrance that’s perfect for shmoozing and bidding on auction items (I took home a very nice bottle of Panther Creek Pinot from the $20 wall-o-wines).

I was absolutely blown away by the Jefferson Dancers – a troupe organized by one of our local high schools. Have you ever experienced a performer that just takes everyone in the audience and you have no choice but to give your absolute and complete attention? This young woman did that. Not just because of her story – she lost her limbs due to an illness – she just took the crowd with her dancing and her charisma. Her connection with the other dancers and with the audience was electric.
